Why "Yenkabi"?

Ghanaians love to talk - about everything. We really love to sound off and speak our minds about issues, and proffer solutions to any problems that come to our notice. The problem is that discussion is not sustained. Within a week, we are off one hot topic and onto the next until an old "hot" topic becomes a new "hot" topic. Should I give one little example? How about the floods that we have every year? What about the destruction of our Atiwa Forest Reserve by giving it out for mining - when we are already experiencing the evils that come with such mining - destruction of farmlands, contamination of rivers and underground water...... What kind of legacy are we leaving to our children, grandchildren and great grand children? And that about the suspicions of corruption on different levels? It is heartbreaking and most people feel helpless and frustrated. Where three or more people are gathered, there is usually a lot of stress-relieving "venting" about the state of the country, and indeed, the state of the world generally. So we felt that we should start a platform where social issues can be discussed.

With this platform, we hope that we can rail and vent comfortably and through discussion and brainstorming, make constructive suggestions to help address issues of concern.

We could have made it "Yebekabi", which means "we shall also talk", or "Yenka", which literally translates to "Let's talk". We settled on "Yenkabi" which translates literally as "Let us say our bit". In other words, "let us speak out", or "Let's sound off".

So you are invited to join the discussion, comment on contributions, and share what you find interesting. Let's sound off! Yenkabi!
