Launch of the Avila Initiative

The Ávila Initiative, a Ghanaian charity and volunteering non-profit initiative which aims to create opportunities to support the well-being of members of the Ghanaian society, was officially launched on 16th June 2020 at the Save Them Young Orphanage in Tema, Golf City.

The Initiative was created by a group of six friends who are currently undergoing their national service at different institutions – Emmanuella Asante-Darko, Ekua Inkoom, Awura Ama Dadieh, Dzifa Oklu, Jennifer Manyo and Miriam Tetteh- who met as students of the University of Ghana while studying Spanish together. The name of the initiative - Ávila- was obtained from the address of the apartment where the founders lived for a year during their study abroad programme in Spain. There, a bond of friendship was established and upon their return to Ghana, they decided to create something positive which would help to reinforce their friendship and also help share it with others.

With support from donors, friends, volunteers and their sponsors (Bayakly Cakes, Standard Weave, and Kojotse Photography), the group collaborated with the Save Them Young Orphanage to support them with their needs in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. The items donated included a large size locally made cooking stove, some toiletries, bags of water, mops, brooms and some clothes and shoes. The Orphanage supports over seventy children ranging from the ages of 6 months old to 19-year olds.

The initiative aims to undertake projects which will help raise awareness of the different societal problems we face as a country among the youth in Ghana and how in our own small ways, we can contribute to putting smiles on the faces of the underprivileged in society and contribute to development in Ghana.
